From what I know, C. Lazarus was one of the finest cabinet/furniture makers of the Raj-era, and pieces are still in high demand...mostly in solid mahogany ..which happens to be my favorite wood as well. :-)
If the internet sales figures are to be believed (there is no way of verifying 100%), a small mahogany center table sold for around $1500
http://www.antiques-atlas.com/antique/centre_table/as256a270
And these pieces are rare. ...Anon- Youre welcome. Good luck with the new home.
Regarding your question on the drapery rod. Personally I would chose dark-wood (have given some wood types/options in the post above). I feel that "bamboo" lends a more Island Style look which I feel is a different style in its own. But thats just my personal choice. :) Go with what works for you. Dont be constrained to experiment. I really enjoyed your article as I am quite in love with the British Colonial style. Thank you for your research and well written advice. As a sidenote - it is refreshing to see your holding to the true "look" and history of the style. After researching "British Colonial" on sites such as HGTV, I've found pictures of rooms with a little rattan here or accent pineapple there juxtaposed with modern furniture and design - not a fan. Again, your beautiful and accurate descriptions are much appreciated! It's amazing to me how few people are aware of what BC even means when I tell them that is my style of decorating. I just adore mixing the styles from all over the world that may be introduced into that setting and the romance of travel that goes along with it. In an interior design class I attended, we had to produce a design board with the style we wished to produce in our homes. Mine was British Colonial - I explained the concept to the rest of the class during my presentation and the best descriptions I could come up with were "bringing elegance and refinement into the wilderness" and "imposing order on chaos" basically "a fine china tea set, beautiful rugs and furniture - in your tent!"

Thanks for your article.
